Client brief was to create a naturalistic landscape within a rest home in Sapporo, Japan, which gives an impression of a dense woodland structure without the option of planting trees as the site is used for to store snow during winter, a significant challenge for gardeners in northern Japan. The ground was very compacted and nutrient poor, and by using robust plants and introducing composting the soil will gradually be improved. I include sensory plantings with tactile foliage and brightly coloured flowers and edible plants to provide association with wild food and stimulate the senses of garden users.
自然の森にいるような感覚になれるような植栽、ただし冬季間除雪車の通り道になるため樹木使わないでという要望でした。土壌は固く踏み固められていたため、やせ地でも育ちやすい植物を選んでいます。たい肥箱も設置し、自家製のたい肥を毎年加えながら徐々に土作りをすることも勧めています。入所者の方々が楽しめるよう鮮やかな色、手触りの良い植物や山菜などの食用になる植物も含まれ、いろんな感覚を刺激するような植栽を目指しています。
